About Re/Make:
Remake is a nonprofit organization that holds fashion companies accountable for unethical practices. This organization was founded in 2015 by Ayesha Barenblat. She created Remake because she believes “that fashion can be a force for good.” It is a community of over 1,000 fashion lovers across the globe. Most are passionate about sustainability and advocate for women’s rights. Above all, this community is driven to better the protocols of the fashion industry. Part of Remake’s vision is to help end starvation and exploitation of garment workers. Right now, Ethiopian garment workers earn roughly $26 per month. On average, the living wage in Ethiopia is $110 per month. Remake is here to elevate the voice of garment workers to achieve the proper working conditions for them.
Core Values:
Three foundational aspects that define this nonprofit: education, accountability and advocacy. Part of its mission is to inform people about the realistic horrors of the fashion empire. Remake is designed to easily access information so that more people are aware of fast fashion. The more people are aware, the louder the resistance. Part of the accountability process is for Remake to target certain clothing brands and review what they can do better within a fashion company.
Re/Make’s Impact:
About $40 billion worth of clothes were produced during the developmental stages of COVID-19. Retail companies experienced a complete flatline of sales, resulting in incomplete paychecks for garment workers. The substantial loss of sales led to millions of garment workers without a job. Workers were never compensated for their countless hours of tedious, manual labor. In March 2020, Remake jump started its campaign #PayUp. This campaign exposed the unethicalities of these fashion giants, while providing solidarity to these workers. Social media fueled this campaign– our hashtag became viral. Re/Make was able to receive over 270,000 signed petitions. By December 2020, the campaign recovered roughly $15 billion worth of losses owed to factory workers.
